Cycling

With its tree-lined country lanes, peaceful back roads, railway paths and National Cycle Network routes, Cumbria is at its best explored by bike. Ideally placed for many attractions across the Central Lakes, Thorney How is a great starting point for an adventure on two wheels. And you can now access Grasmere bike hire directly from us, making your stay even easier.

Cyclists can start from the peaceful village of Grasmere and choose gentle beginner rides or take on tougher long-distance treks. Being at the heart of the Lakes, Grasmere is perfectly situated to take in lakes, fells and pretty villages. Nearby Rydal and Thirlmere are within easy reach, with stunning clear lakes and traditional Lakeland farms and cottages.

Hiring a bike from us couldn’t be easier. Available for adult guests and non-residents during the day, you can set your own sightseeing pace. Overnight guests can even enjoy the light summer nights with hire available for short evening rides.

Choose your own adventure

Take the Grasmere Trail to neighbouring Ambleside for a 10k ride with beautiful scenery. You’ll pass the peaceful shoreline of Rydal water, using quiet lanes and recently improved bridleways, ending in the bustling town of Ambleside, full of local shops, restaurants and cafes for refuelling!

For those seeking more adventure, the challenging 15k Grasmere, Hawkshead & Coniston trail takes riders over a mixture of stone tracks, steep climbs and country lanes, avoiding the busier roads around the Central Lakes. Breathtaking views of Skelwith Bridge and the stunning villages of Coniston and Hawkshead make this a fulfilling ride.
