A busy rural hostel in south Lakeland with 50 beds, a full catering offer, events, parties, weddings as well as individual travellers and groups. We need an enthusiastic energetic team player with the ability to perform general hostel duties including some catering and bar work.

Situated off the beaten track directly on the Coast to Coast pathway and under Helm Crag in Grasmere. Thorney How is a listed building sitting in 2.25 acres of grounds, so you may even find yourself working in the garden. Must like cats and hens and have a good sense of humour.

We’ve had a successful first few weeks at Thorney How Independent Hostel in Grasmere with regular bookings and a busy Easter period.

We are now looking for a general assistant to start as soon as possible.

Duties will be varied according to seasonality and bookings performance.

Hours will be flexible and on a rota basis to ensure cover throughout the week and weekends working alongside the Assistant Manager F/T and Chef P/T.

Ideally you will have had some previous experience with cooking, cleaning, service and front of house. However most important is a cheerful and personable nature, being keen to get on with other staff, reliability and honesty along with getting the work done swiftly. Salary is dependent on experience.

Chef required, Grasmere. We have an excellent opportunity for an experienced Chef at Thorney How Independent Hostel in Grasmere. The Hostel is set in the heart of the Lake District with 10 bedrooms and over 50 beds. The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years experience as a Chef working with fresh produce in a demanding environment. Essential requirements: confident in menu planning and pricing, stock taking, stock rotation, food hygiene certificate level 2 and above. Must be computer literate and familiar with standard software such as spreadsheets. Must be prepared to be flexible and undertake other tasks within the hostel as required, able to work under pressure and fit in with a small tight nit team.

Salary £14-16000 initially offered as a pro rata P/T seasonal role with opportunities to extend to a FT permanent contract. Accommodation is not provided.

Alasdair joins us having previously worked with a number of hostels in the Lakes.

Let’s hope that he does not lock himself out and enjoys his first week :)

So it feels like this is the start of something new. We’re very excited and not just a little daunted at the prospect of setting up in business. There seems to be so much to do.

But we still have to wait for all the legalities to conclude. Banks, lawyers, accountants, surveyors, architects, builders, landscapers and other advisers are all doing their thing right now. As soon as we have a firm move date we’ll let you know.

We’re thinking a lot about lifestyle, sustainability and a lot of hard work to be done, over and above our main jobs.

We’ll be hiring staff very soon and hopefully taking bookings from April!

Meanwhile we still have to pack up and say goodbye to Old Forge Cottage and all our Kentmere friends. This will be hard enough!
